HE SAID NOTHING at all, as it turned out. And that made it worse. He only watched her through narrowed black eyes when she mentioned it, oh, so carelessly, as they prepared for bed that night.
âShe didnât tell me what she wanted to discuss with you. She said that it was personal. I told her Iâd give you the message. She did say that sheâd be in touch.â She peered up at him.
His hard face didnât soften. He searched her eyes, looking for signs of jealousy, but none were there. Sheâd given him the bare bones of Leslieâs visit with no emotion at all. Surely if he meant anything to her, it would have mattered that he was carrying on private, personal discussions with another woman. And Leslieâs name had been linked with his in past years. She must have known that, too.
âWas that all?â he asked.
She shrugged. âAll that I remember.â She smiled. âSheâs a knockout, isnât she?â she added generously. âHer hair is long and thick and wavy. Iâve never seen a human being with hair like that...itâs almost alive. Does she model?â
âShe was a motion picture actress until the death of her husband. She was tired of the pace so when she inherited his fortune, she gave it up.â
âIsnât it boring for her here, in such a small community?â
âShe spends a lot of time chasing Dawson Rutherford.â
That was discouraging, for Barrie, anyway. Antonia wondered if Barrie knew about her stepbrotherâs contact with the woman. Then she remembered what her father had said about Dawson.
âDoes he like her?â she asked curiously.
âHe likes her land,â he replied. âWeâre both trying to get her to sell a tract that separates his border from mine. Her property has a river running right through it. If he gets his hands on it, Iâll have an ongoing court battle over water rights, and vice versa.â
âSo it really is business,â she blurted out.
He cocked an eyebrow. âI didnât say that was all it was,â he replied softly, mockingly. âRutherford is a cold fish with women, and Leslie is, how can I put it, overstimulated.â
Her breath caught in her throat. âHow overstimulated is she?â she demanded suddenly. âAnd by whom?â
He pursed his lips and toyed with his sleeve. âMy past is none of your concern.â
She glared at him and sat upright in the bed. âAre you sleeping with her?â
His eyebrows jumped up. âWhat?â
âYou heard me!â she snapped. âI asked if you were so determined to get that land that youâd forsake your marriage vows to accomplish it!â
âIs that what you think?â he asked, and he looked vaguely threatening.
âWhy else would she come here to the house to see you?â she asked. âAnd at a time when she knew you were usually home and Maggie was in school?â
âYouâre really unsettled about this, arenât you? What did she say to you?â
âShe said youâd been at her house every evening when you were supposedly working late,â she muttered sharply. âAnd she acted as if I were the interloper, not her.
